Reminder to all Moms:

Moms: take more family photos with your kids

Take Photos WITH Your Kids

When I became a mom, everyone always told me, “take lots of pictures, because they change so fast.”

I’m glad that I did take pictures, because it is hard to remember anything from that newborn time, most likely due to sleep deprivation.

So I have been making a conscious effort to take more pictures of my kids, but one thing that I have really failed to do is take pictures WITH my kids.

My daughter, who is my second child, is now 8 months old. We have exactly 3 pictures that contain all four of our family members (my husband, my son, my daughter, and me).

Only three pictures in 8 months! That’s a problem.

I also don’t seem to have many pictures of just me with either or both of my kids. There are a few reasons for this. For one thing, we haven’t been able to go anywhere in months, but this is not a good reason for failing to take any pictures with my family.

In fact, we have more time together now than we have ever had, and I really feel that you don’t need to go somewhere special in order to take meaningful pictures with your family. This is the perfect time to get the family together and take some photos.

The problem is, we don’t have anyone to take a picture for us.

Now, maybe I’m the only one out there who took so long to figure this out, but I finally discovered what I needed to do about this.

I bought a smart phone tripod! I found one on Amazon for a really reasonable price. It arrived after only two days, which just so happened to be on Mother’s Day. It was quick and easy to set up and we were ready to start snapping some pics in minutes.

So, I put on some makeup for the first time in weeks and a real shirt (a loose one, because you know you gotta ease into this whole wearing real clothes thing). I still wore my leggings because I’m certain I won’t be able to button my jeans right now, but we took a family picture!

I am just so thrilled to finally have another family photo. I also decided that while I love nice photos where we all look presentable, I also equally love the photos that document our real-life.

This year for Mother’s Day, we didn’t go out to eat or do anything out of the ordinary, but we spent the day together as a family. We played in the backyard, we planted flowers, and we finally took a family photo!

When I look back at this picture, I will remember that we were together and we were happy. (Maybe at some point I will actually try to get everyone dressed up and take a more formal picture with the tripod).

The family pictures are not only important for me to have, but also for my kids to have. One day, they will look back at these pictures and remember the time we spent together as a family.

I know that even though I hate to be photographed without makeup and my hair a mess, it will not matter to my kids what I looked like(hopefully). I treasure pictures of my parents, and I hope that one day my kids will look back at family photos and also be filled with love and joy.

So, to all the moms out there who always put everyone else first. This is for you.

Remember, don’t just take pictures OF your kids. Take pictures WITH your kids!

  2. I’ve been trying to do this for years! I try to have at least one to put in with a journal entry for each kiddo around their birthday…but yeah it’s sad how few of just me and the kids there are, getting a tripod!
